Civil War |
As of 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed to prohibit discrimination in public places. There has always been a misperception about the acts role in racial desegregation of the Americans healthcare. One was that particularly in the south, there were hospitals for white people and hospitals for African Americans. Blacks couldn't often obtain the privileges that white physicians got. Care at the black hospitals often tended to be lower quality, usually due to the lack of resources. African American nurses, no matter how senior, were not able to supervise white nurses. Only 10 percent of Northern hospitals accepted African American interns or residents.
